MOONTRAILS is the artistic and graphic studio of Philippe Ames. Philippe lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland. As an independant artist, he makes illustrations and sculptures and teaches art and woodworking to children and teenagers.
SCULPTURES
His sculptures are collages of all that is wood: woodshop scrap and construction wood, driftwood, pencils, wood rulers and pieces of old furniture…etc. Cut, sawed, glued, filed, grated, sanded, these objects take shape following the mouvement of the tools and of the hands. The relationship body-mind is a central theme in his sculptures, as too the questions of identity, roots, the living body, emotions, breath and mindfulness.
ILLUSTRATIONS
His illustrations are often either gouache paintings with gray pencil, or collages of cutout transparent papers, photographed in silhouette. They are printed either in magazines, children’s books or websites. For exemple, he illustrated books for teenagers written by the monk and poet Thich Nhat Hanh, published by Parallax Press in Berkeley, California. His logos are handdrawn, then finished in Illustrator and Photoshop.
BIOGRAPHY
Philippe was born in Berkeley on March 2nd 1965. At the age of 6, he moved to the french part of Switzerland. Since then he has not stopped coming and going between California and Switzerland.
Since his first encounters with comic books, Philippe has developped an active relationship with stories told visually. He started very young expressing himself by drawing his own graphic novels.
He graduated from high school «Collège Voltaire» in Geneva in 1986. After a semester of internship in the graphics department at the Tribune de Genève (precomputer!) he continued his education in illustration and Fine-Arts at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He finished with a Bachelor in Fine-Arts (BFA) in 1991 with a minor in film & vidéo.
Philippe has lived 22 years in California, mainly in the San Francisco bay area. He has worked as a film & video editor, a videographer, and mostly as a cartoon animator.
Between 1994 and 2004, he participated on projects for animation companies such as Colossal Pictures, Curious Pictures and Wildbrain in San Francisco. From 2003 to 2007 he was taking classes in the field of woodwork and carpentry at Laney College, Oakland, and with practice, he developed some skills as an amateur carpenter and woodworker. He built some furniture, renovated elements of construction, and built garden structures, such as fences and decks. This activity brought him to also create sculptures out of wood.
Since 1999 he also occasionally teaches classes in drawing, woodworking and comicbooks art to children and teenagers. For a year he accompanied adult artists with disabilities in their artistic endeavors ( niad.org ) . This experience inspired him to also use art therapy methods in his classes.
Since 2008, he lives in Lausanne, Switzerland and continues to do art and teach.

SCULPTURES
Ses sculptures sont des collages de tout ce qui est en bois: chutes de bois noble d’hébénistes et déchets de chantiers de constructions, bois flottant trouvé au bord du lac, crayons, règles et morceaux de meubles anciens… etc. Coupés, sciés, collés, rapés, poncés, ces objets prennent forme dans ses mains suivant le mouvement de l’outil et du corps. Justement, cette relation corps-esprit est un thème central dans ses sculptures, ainsi que la question de l’identité, de l’enracinement, du corps vivant, de l’affectif, du souffle et de la plaine conscience.
ILLUSTRATIONS
Ses illustrations sont souvent soit des peintures à la guache et dessins au crayon gris, soit des collages et des découpages de papiers transparents, photographiés en ombres chinoises. Il publie dans les magazines, dans les livres pour enfants et dans les sites web. Par exemple, il a illustré des livres pour adolescants écrits par le moine et poète Thich Nhat Hanh, publié par Parallax Press, à Berlekey en Californie. Ses logos sont d’abord dessinés puis terminés à l’aide de logiciels tel que Adobe Photoshop et Illustrator.
BIOGRAPHIE
Philippe est né à Berkeley en Californie le 2 Mars 1965. A partir de 6 ans il a véçu en Suisse romande. Ensuite, il n’a cessé d’aller et venir entre la Suisse et la Californie.
Dès ses premières lectures de bandes dessinées, Philippe a entretenu un rapport actif avec les histoires qui se racontent visuellement. Il commença très tôt à s’exprimer en dessinant ses propres histoires.
Il a reçu une maturité en section artistique au collège Voltaire à Genève en 1986. Après un sémestre de stage dans le département graphique de la Tribune de Genève (preordinateur!) il est allé faire des études d’illustration et de Beaux-Arts à l’Art Center College of Design de Pasadena, en Californie. Il a été diplômé d’un Bachelor en Beaux-Arts (BFA) en 1991 avec un mineur en film & vidéo.
Philippe a vécu 22 ans en Californie, surtout à San Francisco et dans sa région. Il a travaillé comme monteur de film & vidéo, comme vidéographe, et surtout comme dessinateur de dessins animés. Entre 1994 et 2004, il travaillait pour des compagnies de renom telles que Colossal Pictures, Curious Pictures et Wildbrain à San Francisco.
De 2003 à 2007 il prenait des cours dans le domaine du travail de bois, à Laney College, Oakland, Ca, et avec la pratique, il a développé des compétences d’amateur dans l’ébénisterie et la menuiserie. Il a construit du meuble, des aménagements de jardins, et de la rénovation douce d’éléments d’habitation. Cela l’a amené également à faire de la sculpture sur bois. Depuis 1999, il donne occasionnellement des cours d’art, de bandes dessinées et de travaux manuels à des enfants, avec des méthodes inspirées aussi par l’art-thérapie. Ceci est l’influence d’un stage d’une année, où il a accompagné des adultes artistes en situation d’handicaps dans leurs activités créatives. (niadart.org )
De retour en Suisse depuis 2008, il continue son travail d’enseignant d’art et de plasticien indépendant.
